11 June 2010, HVMS Achieves BS OHSAS 18001:2007 Accreditation
HVMS has this week successfully achieved BS OHSAS 18001:2007 the internationally recognised standard for Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems in the workplace.

The audit and accreditation was carried out independently by the Lloyd's Register Group which itself is recognised globally.

The OHSAS 18001 standard has been developed to be compatible with the ISO 9001:2008 (Quality) management systems standards (which HVMS has held for some years), in order to facilitate the integration of quality and occupational health and safety management systems for organisations.

This verifies HVMS’ commitment to Health & Safety and provides the framework for organising our Health & Safety Management Systems and should enable HVMS to control its OH&S risks and further improve its performance in relation to safety. "HVMS has seen safety and safe working systems as core to our business for years. This internationally recognised standard helps us formally link all our activities to ensure the best principles and practices are observed and saw OHSAS 18001 as an ideal vehicle to help us achieve this” - Jim Radcliffe CMIOSH, MIIRSM, MCIPD, HVMS Health, Safety & Environmental Manager

The standard covers the following:

1) Planning for hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control
2) OHSAS management programme
3) Structure and responsibility
4) Training, awareness and competence
5) Consultation and communication
6) Operational control
7) Emergency preparedness and response
8) Performance measuring, monitoring and improvement

The key benefits of achieving BS OHSAS 18001:2007 include:

1) Reduction in the number of accidents
2) Less absenteeism
3) Reduction in downtime and associated costs
4) Lower insurance premiums
5) Higher productivity
6) Improved business performance
7) Improved management of health and safety risks
8) Improved reputation
9) More engagement with top management
10) Improved compliance with legislation
11) Lower risk of prosecution and fines
12) Integration with existing management systems
13) More innovation
